How to Vacation on a Budget

Don’t Let Spending Ruin the Trip

Who doesn’t love to dream and indulge in the travel brochure that talks about cutting loose and living large? With that said, money concerns should never ruin a vacation. It is possible to vacation on a budget, with just a little thought and preplanning.

Set a Budget

Vacationing on a budget is impossible unless there is an actual budget.

Take the time to create a budget, set aside a specific amount each month for vacation savings, and don’t exceed your spending. A budget is not meant to be restrictive, but rather liberating. Once you factor vacation saving, you will know if you need to delay the trip until you have enough saved or take a look at the plan and get creative.

Stay Close to Home

Exotic destinations are great, and those pictures of friends in Cancun would make anyone jealous but coming home to a Cancun-sized credit card bill might put a sour taste in one’s mouth. Try to explore close to home and find destinations that don’t require a plane ride. This reduces travel costs and the time necessary to get there. This might turn into a favourite spot that you never discovered before.

Travel on Off-Days

Every vacation hotspot has its peak seasons and peak weeks and even peak days. Try to avoid these if possible and go at a time when the crowds will be smaller. This is not just to save time in the lines, but it actually helps travelers pay less for tickets, hotels and admissions on off-season days.

Now, times such as summer, spring break, and winter holidays are busy for a reason. There may be limited choices when it comes to time off, but a little planning and creativity just might open up some new options.  Planning certain activities on a Monday as opposed to Saturday could ease the stress on the wallet a little bit.

Don’t Overspend on Room and Board

Vacations are for making memories, and it is very unlikely that you will be fondly remembering a hotel room in ten years. Accommodations and food make up some of the biggest line items of a vacation budget, so try to make some cuts here if you can.  Pick a less expensive hotel, and maybe even cook in while you’re traveling. One or two nights of fantastic dining could end up being cheaper than 7 days of fast food – and far more memorable.
