Hustling on the Side

The reality of life is that most people do not get to live their passion and make money for it.  People work their jobs to make money so they can go home and do what they love, and sometimes they daydream about how great it would be if they could actually get paid for it.

But with the rise of the Internet and the proliferation of quality equipment, coupled with easy access to an audience, it is possible to make a little money on the side doing something that is not quite at full-time status.  Or leaving all the dreaming aside, maybe a person just needs a few extra bucks to pay off that last student loan or save for an amazing dream vacation.

Detailing Cars

Almost everyone has cleaned a car at some point.  It is not exactly a skilled job, but most people are not interested in spending time vacuuming, washing and maybe waxing their car when they finally have a few spare minutes.  Because people will pay for that service; this is an opportunity.  Buy some quality materials, take the time to do a good job, and it will be surprising how successful such an enterprise can be.

Drive for an App

Every so often the public is delighted by the arrival of a new app service that will deliver something – whether it’s a meal to the door, or a person to a destination.  Why not drive for Lyft or DoorDash or something similar?  Employees can set their own hours, more or less, and all it takes is a working vehicle.

Flipping

Someone trying to start a side hustle ought to examine the expertise they already encompass.  It might be repairing bicycles, giving old clothes a refresh, or maybe even repairing and reselling lawn tools such as mowers or snow blowers.  Why not invest a little money up front picking up some things that have been donated to a thrift store, take some time to restore them, and then sell them for a profit?  Take that old end table home, sand it down, stain it, and replace the handle to transform it into a sellable product.

Lawn Care

Many people mowed lawns as teens, and that is still a viable business.  Someone with a lawn mower, a leaf blower, and a weed whacker can easily drum up some work for themselves.  It’s as easy as going door to door and offering reasonable rates.  Post the service online so people can find it and work one or two hours over the weekend for some extra money.  During winter season, do the same with a snowblower.

Walking Dogs

A growing convention is that busy people will pay other folks to walk their dogs for them.  Some people can make this a lucrative venture, and it has little to no overhead.  Plus, there are the benefits of getting to work with animals every day and reaping the benefits of plenty of exercise.  Do a great job and watch the word-of-mouth network bring in new clients and contracts.
