Summer is officially here! While longer days and warmer weather bring a lot to look forward to, they can also bring unexpected expenses. From weekend getaways to BBQ season to higher utility bills, summer spending can sneak up fast.
The good news? A little planning goes a long way. Here's how to build a summer budget that works for you.
1. Know what’s coming in (and going out)
Start by figuring out your monthly income—this includes your paycheck, side gigs, or any regular support you receive. Then list out your fixed expenses (like rent, bills, or insurance). What’s left is what you’ll work with for summer fun, savings, and anything in between.
Pro tip: A budget isn’t about restriction—it’s about intention. It gives you more control over where your money goes.
2. Anticipate the extras
Summer brings all kinds of seasonal expenses. Things like:
- Long weekends or road trips
- Outdoor activities and events
- Higher electricity bills (thanks, A/C!)
- Summer camps or childcare
- Backyard upgrades, patios, or garden projects
- Planning your wedding day and honeymoon
Try to estimate how much these might cost—and build them into your budget early.
3. Set spending goals (not just limits)
Instead of just saying “I won’t spend too much,” give your dollars a job. Want to enjoy a staycation, upgrade your outdoor space, or attend a concert? Put those goals in your budget and start setting money aside now.
4. Make room for the unexpected
From surprise wedding invites to last-minute car repairs, it helps to have a little buffer. Even $20–$50 a month toward an emergency fund can give you peace of mind when life throws a curveball.
5. Use tools that help you stay on track
Whether it’s a spreadsheet, a budget app, or even a prepaid card (we offer those at Money Mart®!), use whatever helps you stick to your plan. The best tool is the one that works for you.
6. Check in often
Budgets aren’t “set it and forget it.” Check in with yours weekly or biweekly to see what’s working—and adjust as needed. Life happens, and your budget can flex with you.
